Joseph R. Jefferson, MA
Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
Certified Psychiatric Rehabilitation Practitioner
Joseph R. Jefferson (pronouns: he/him/his) utilizes a strength-based, dynamic, trauma-informed approach to empower individuals to overcome personal obstacles to improve their lives and relationships. Joseph is licensed as an LMFT in Minnesota and Wisconsin, which drives his systemic and relational focus while working with individuals. Joseph has experience working with clients across the lifespan, addressing issues such as depression, anxiety, trauma, grief/loss, attachment issues, anger management, stress management, emotional and behavioral dysregulation, and life/family transitions. He utilizes various therapeutic techniques and interventions that are adjusted to best fit the client’s needs.
Joseph’s experiences and settings in which he formed his clinical approach have been broad. Growing up in a large family reinforced attunement at a young age to the mental health needs of others. Joseph is passionate about using inclusive language and advocating for racial and social justice. Joseph also strives to recognize opportunities to combat gender disparities and validate intersectionality. Joseph enjoys working with the LGBTQ+ populations, particularly those across the gender spectrum. Joseph currently does not work with couples or families, now only accepting referrals for individual therapy clients (10 years or older).
Joseph earned his MA in Counseling Psychology: Marriage and Family Therapy from the Minnesota School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University, and is in the final stages of his Doctorate in Counseling Psychology (PsyD) at the University of St. Thomas. He completed a predoctoral internship for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania at Torrance State Hospital, just outside Pittsburgh, PA. Joseph is licensed as an LMFT in MN and WI and recognized by the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association as a Certified Psychiatric Rehabilitation Practitioner (CPRP).
Joseph enjoys spending his free time with his partner, family, and friends. Joseph is an avid runner, having run a full marathon in 2:38. He is passionate about living a healthy lifestyle and physical fitness and incorporates a health psychology perspective when appropriate. Additionally, Joseph loves taking his dogs, Kingston and Harriet, to the dog park and scouting out new trails for walking/running.
Joseph is being supervised by Dr. Carlo A. Giacomoni for psychological testing.
