Schizophrenia
In several ways Schizophrenia is the most severe yet misunderstood of the mental health diagnoses. There is a common misconception that people with schizophrenia are violent and unpredictable. Although their behaviors can be odd and therefore appear unpredictable, the reality is that people with schizophrenia are disproportionately more likely to be victims rather than perpetrators of violence. Among the most common and ‘traditional’ symptoms of schizophrenia are auditory hallucinations in which the person hears voices and/or other sounds. People with schizophrenia also often experience delusions or bizarre thoughts, and sometimes say things that don’t make sense. They also often engage in odd behaviors such as withdrawing from others, showing little emotion, having an unusual appearance, and generally being disorganized in their speech and behavior. There is no typical pattern of behaviors in schizophrenia and other mental health conditions can resemble schizophrenia, which can make diagnosing schizophrenia difficult.
People with schizophrenia often need life-long help, support, and treatment. In most cases they have to take psychiatric medications for the rest of their lives, so it is important to have a trusted psychiatrist who can manage medications and made adjustments as necessary. People with schizophrenia often have difficulty working or living independently. In these cases people often have to establish a strong social support network, or might have to reside in a group home or nursing home for assistance. Additionally, people with severe schizophrenia often have to have a guardian appointed to them by the courts. All of these factors can be determined through a proper assessment.
